Morocco joins Spain & Portugal in 2030 World Cup bid

Morocco say they have joined Spain and Portugal in a three-way bid to host the 2030 Fifa World Cup. Ukraine, who were invaded by Russia in February 2022, had initially joined Spain and Portugal's bid in October. It is not clear what will happen to Ukraine's role after the announcement by Morocco at Tuesday's Fifa Congress. It has been reported there were concerns due to the ongoing war and governance issues at the Ukraine Football Association. Morocco caused a surprise at the 2022 World Cup as they became the first African side to reach the semi-finals. They lost to France in the last four before being beaten by Croatia in the third-place play-off. "I would like to announce that the Kingdom of Morocco has decided, together with Spain and Portugal, to present a joint bid to host the 2030 World Cup," Morocco's King Mohammed VI said in a letter read by the country's minister of sport Chakib Benmoussa in Kigali, where Fifa is hosting its 73rd congr...

Nigeria’s U-17 women’s national team the Flamingos beat the USA in a nervy penalty shootout to reach the semi-finals of the U-17 Women’s World Cup for the first time in India. The young Nigerian girls triumphed on 4-3 penalties after the full time ended 1-1. The Flamingos had consistently failed to get past the last eight of the competition since it was first hosted in 2008, but with the hard-fought win, Bankole Olowookere’s side broke the jinx to reach the final four of the cadet tournament. Flamingos scored first in the 27th minute after Omamuzo Edafe converted from the penalty spot, but the Americans equalised in the 40th minute off a deflected Amelia Villarreal shot inside the box. The second half will see the USA mount relentless pressure on the Flamingos. The USA raked in several corners camping in the Flamingos half on the attack. FIFA Ranking: Super Eagles slip by one spot, now world 32nd October 6, 2022 The Super Eagles of Nigeria have slipped by one spot to be ranked 32nd in the world in the October world ranking by global football governing body FIFA. ADVERTISING In the ranking table released on Thursday, the Nigerian senior men’s national team garnered 1498.47 points in September as against the 1504.7 garnered in August. On the continental level, they are still placed fourth behind Senegal (world 18th), Morocco (23rd) and Tunisia (30th).
